2013-04-21 001Luck lead me to this wonderful Crazy Quilt ~ a fantastic estate find. Dated 1894 and signed Chun Hargitt. I was able to get a little information from the internet and found that this is the nickname of Charles Hargitt of Norwalk, CA. There is even a museum named after him called The Hargitt House. If you take the time to study the pictures, (there are a LOT of them!) you will see that although the silk is worn in several areas, this quilt is still so precious! Everyone that I was able to show it to was completely enamored with it!

This is how I posted it on ebay:

CHUN HARGITT June 29, ’94 (1894)

REF: The Hargitt House was Built in 1891 by the D.D. Johnston family, the Hargitt House was built in the architectural style of Victorian Eastlake. The Hargitt House Museum, located at 12426 Mapledale, was donated to the people of Norwalk by Charles (“Chun”) and Ida Hargitt.

Note: There is no determination who actually made this quilt. It may have been Charles, his wife, Ida, or maybe someone else in the honor of Charles “Chun” Hargitt.

Note: 1 Water stain 1” x 1.5”

Each block is backed by cotton fabric in muted plaids and solids. Some of the silk patches are worn or threadbare an although the stitches remain in tact, the backing fabric shows through. The entire quilt has been backed in blue wide-wale corduroy. The decorative stitches in the finished edges are consistent with the top; but I am not an expert and am unable to determine if the backing is original to the quilt.

The pictures tell the story…
